Cuba

Allende took office as President of Chile on November 3, 1970. According to http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/COLDallende.htm, “Allende also restored democratic relations with Cuba, China, and the German Democratic Republic.” The United States was afraid that Chile would become another Cuba. The United States CIA presented anti-Allende propaganda in Chile’s media. In August 1973, Congress moved against Allende declaring that Allende’s government was a violation of Chile’s government. Chile’s military stormed the presidential palace, and on September 11, 1973 Allende died with his machine gun in hand fighting against a military coup.
