U.S Money

In 1964 Allende lost to President Eduardo Frei. Frei was the candidate that the previous president Lyndon Johnson had wanted to win. According to http://www.fsmitha.com/h2/ch24y.htm, “agents from the United States had gone to Chile with money to influence the election, and Frei had narrowly defeated Salvador Allende Gossens, a Marxist candidate with support from Chile’s Communist Party – said to be 100,000 strong.” Each time Allende ran for president the U.S. spent money trying to keep him from winning, but in the 1970 election they were unsuccessful.
