Salvador Allende was born in Valparaiso, Chile in 1903. Allende was a medical student in college and became involved with radical politics. He was arrested multiple times while in college. In 1933 Allende help found the “Chilean Socialist Party,” which is a Marxist organization. Allende was an unsuccessful candidate for president in 1958 and 1964, but he finally won during the 1970 presidential election and became the first Marxist president in Chile.
